Coffee break at The Orange Thimble

Venue: The Orange Thimble

Popped into this cafe almost 3 wks ago..it has been around for awhile. Can you really blame me for being slow to try out the indie cafes? There are just way too many new ones just in the past one year. Coffees and cakes at these places don't exactly come cheap :P Best way to enjoy them is to go with a few good friends! Good company and good desserts go hand in hand!

We got there about 630pm.Right..strange time for desserts..but we had lunch at a strange time too..so yeah.. :P It was quite packed ..but most people were just about to leave..

old mosaic tiles
and a puddle of coffee!

check out the old safe ..at the doorsteps

nice cozy corner..
was taken when we got there..

We were seated right smack
in the middle..
Right next to the cake display case!

Soft and not too sweet
Matcha and red beans :D

Oh so rich!
Hazelnut Dacquoise,
Rich Valrhona Chocolate and Hazelnut Meringue
All these desserts were shared by 5 of us..
This is way too much for one person!

my hot mocha and
quite normal coffee art
can draw something cute?

 Such old school charm..

Didn't take much photos..and besides
I bet you have read about Orange Thimble on
other blogs too :P

Prob.go back soon for the real food..

Eileen Eats- Figos Grail ( closed)

Were your eyes glued to the Tv over the Grand Prix weekend ..watching the race on tele? Or were you at the Marina area watching it live with all the fan fare and vbroom vbroom going round and round?

I was not interested in it but my Mr Toh is . Indeed he is a F1 fan. I have to say that having the night race does do some good to the tourism industry . But traffic's a mess during the F1 season though..and will be till Tuesday 27 Sept!

Oh alrighty..moving along..

I had a quick massage on Saturday & met Alex for late late lunch after that. I recently heard that the radio dj , Zhou Chong Qing aka Aunty Lucy just opened a new restaurant at Katong. We decided to head to the Katong area to try out Figos Grail .

Figos Grail is neighbors with Pasta frasca . It's not too difficult to find. There are lots of other cafes and eateries in that stretch .

Let's go in..

paintings and photos lined
both side of the restaurant
The above paintings are for sale...

Chong Qing n his friends'
travel photos

Design of the place is simple..

incase you think where's the crowd..
that's because it was already 3pm
and we are the last diners for lunch !~

Last order for lunch is 3pm..
(for wkend only)
It's very much a travel theme place..
as in the menu has dishes from different countries.

Here's what we ate :P

Starter
Hawaii Seafood Cake with
Chili-Coriander-Mango Salsa

Yummy!

Mushroom soup :)

My "Chong Qing Brown Rice Fried Rice "
Shrimps were very fresh..
Was a tad sweet and abit salty

Thai Smoked Duck Pasta
with Coriander Leaf

Spicy and sweet!

One of the partners spoke to me while
Alex went around to look for a parking space.
Quite a friendly chap.. Asked I did I get to
know this place.. I actually followed
Chong Qing's tweets..that's how :P

it's a newly opened restaurant.
I am sure they do have teething issues.
So give them room for improvement..

Our experience was okay..
just a tad longer wait for our dessert
which is baked upon ordering..

Molten Valrhona Chocolate Cake with
Berries and Vanilla Ice Cream

OOhh!
are you drooling already!?!

Alex was short of licking up the plate ... :P

Look at what section I'm read..
"where to eat'! " :P

We had a fun time taking photos..

Overall it was a nice experience.

~ The Antoinette~

I came to know of this charming restaurant when I visited Mandarin Gallery ( was at Browhaus for my eyebrow appt) . Was really attracted to the whole concept. I didn't pop in that day. I realised they have two other outlets and one of them is just a stone's throw away from my place ~! It's just 5 mins away..and after looking at all the pics on other blogs..i knew I just had to go there..

It is at the oddest place you can imagine ^_^

The exterior could easily pass off as a cafe in Paris ..it was just so quaint :P but step off that pavement and you soon realised oops...you are still in Singapore .

love the doors!
some kid parked her scooter at the door.. :X
made my photo looked so erm.. argh..
you know what i mean.. damn.

Totally East meets West~~!!!

You are greeted with all these pretty cakes as
you enter the cafe..

A lovely place for girls' tea time:D

Have a drink!

Tea Time
Apple tea

Do note that if you are having lunch or dinner..
it's better to choose or reserve a proper table..
the one I sat at was those 'low' ones..
having tea and cake is fine..
but imagine having to bend forward to eat..

The recommended signature cake..
named after the cafe

~ The Antoinette~
milk chocolate mousse infused with earl grey tea,
dark chocolate earl grey tea cremuex,
genoise chocolat with earl grey tea,
praline feullitine with earl grey tea,
liquid raspberry sphere

Pop the cherry!!

Out oozes the liquid raspberry
oohh.. mini explosion of sort

The interior

This particular outlet may
not be as dreamy as the one at
Mandarin Gallery

Centerpiece flora arrangement

Different chairs for different tables

love the restroom! :P

Reminds me very much of
Canele at Robertson Gallery

That's because the pâtissier was previously
from Canele :P

The One who tried Wheat Baumchuken @ TPY

There is this stretch of stalls/shops which has many yummy food to offer just behind the retail outlets at Toa Payoh Central ( Opp. HDB Hub) . The duck rice is popular among office workers, and of coz that's where my fav.porridge is too. It is during one of my lone dinner at the Tiong Bahru Porridge shop did I notice that there is a new cafe just next to it.

This cake cafe has been for awhile in Toa Payoh .. I ventured pass this place on a few occasions and had wanted to buy a slice once..sadly, the servers were too "busy'' to be bothered with me..so I left empty handed.

Just last week, my friend Wei ting passed me a coupon to this cafe ( 10% discount on purchase of $10 )..So I decided to give this place a try again.

It was a better experience this time. The girl at the counter was friendly and even commented that my purse was cute :P

Here's my selection ..

Valrhona chocolate Baumkuchen
( literally, it means tree cake or log cake)
* $4.20*

Here's a bit on this cake...

A typical Baumchuken is made up of 15-20 layers of batter. To achieve the tree rings effect, thin layers of batter are brushed evenly onto a spit and allowed to bake until golden. This process is repeated numerous times. The rings symbolise longevity and prosperity

can you see the layers....?

Baumchuken originated from Germany...thou it is highly disputed who made the first Baumkuchen and where it was first baked. One theory is that it was invented in the German town of Salzwdel which is further popularized by the town itself. Another theory suggests it began as a Hungarian wedding cake, although given its German name this is doubtful.

The layer of chocolate on top adds on to the flavor! It isn't too sweet and u can taste the layers too.. It must have been a tedious job working on the layers one after another. It is almost like Kueh Lapis..just not so oily! :D Plus it is healthier.. coz it's made of wheat! :)

I tried another flavor.. this time round plain without any toppings..

This is the plain green tea one.
( $3.80)

It's not oily
but we kinda found it to be a tad too dry..
I love the matcha taste n there is a slight bitter tea
after taste.. not bad ..just too dry..

Here's their environmental
friendly plastic bag...

Friday Night-- Japanese food n Everything with fries

I am trying my very best to distract myself from the excruciating toothache that I am experiencing now. It is by far the worst ever toothache. If you think wisdom toothache is horrifying, please, this is 100x worse~~~~~~ I used to do cold compress on my wisdom toothache.. but for this case, I don't dare to apply any pressure to the tooth.. mere touching it with my tongue is enough to send me going 'ouch ouch ouch'!!

Made a dash to the another dental clinic as my dentist is only available on Tuesday morning. To cut the story short, I need root canal for my front tooth. The dentist prescribed me two types of antibiotic and some painkillers. I have taken two dosage of the painkillers, but it doesn't seem to have much effect on me... *shrugs* . It is still painful. Anyway, what is thrown on the tables for me now is a root canal treatment plus putting on a crown. Boy this is gonna be so much fun!! * yeah right*

So, last friday, before the pain started haunting me, I was out for dinner with two dear friends, Thomas & Mus.

------------------------

8 Jan Friday

First stop.. Ichiban Boshi at Parkway.

I was amazed by Parkway's transformation! There are new additions to the existing restaurants and food choices :) . One of them would be Ichiban Boshi.

We all love our japanese food! There is something for everyone! :)

My Sukiya Set
I sure love beef!!

Mus' dinner
Chicken katsu with softshell crab...

This is what dear Prof.Manhart ate..
quite a wide spread

Next stop was dessert at this rather small cafe along Joo Chiat . It has a cute name, Everything with Fries. I have heard about this place, just that I didn't had the chance to swing by for food till last Friday with the guys :)

I was told by Mus that the Nutalla tart is a must try at Everything with Fries.

So..Tada!
We found it way way too rich..
It would be nice if there were some berries to go
along with all the sweet chocolately richness

this is a new dessert
My fav. of the two!
I love the warm banana pudding..
It just oozed so much goodness

thomas almost wanted to lick up all the
butterscotch left on the plate

Mus and his new toy :D
yeah!~

me and thomas
looking good :D

It was back to Thomas' after dessert
and here's me chilling at the porch

Cat resting on Thomas
i can't help but to snapped Cat's brown

Looking up at the dragonfly..
he wants to 'play' with it..
