Sunday with a difference-- Animal Lovers League

Sunday 19 Nov

Phew! I finally made it! Alicia had invited me to join her at the dog shelter (i wanted to tag along actually :p) twice I think...and twice I agreed but somethings just had to cropped up at the very last minute. But I finally made it there yesterday...together with two other stomp pals-- Joanna and Andrew :)

The girls started their journey from the north.. with Alicia boarding the train at YCk *i think :P*,and Joanna hopped into the same train at Bishan. All were going accordingly as planned until my side. Darn. I waited quite a while for the bus to arrive that's why I was 3 mins late ..hence the girls had to get out of the east bound train and they waited for me at Kallang mrt station :P

It's the first time Joanna n I met. She's just like what she is in the forum, frank and outgoing :) We were chatting happily on the way to Pasir Ris. By the time we arrived at Whitesands , it was already 1.30. The 3 ladies made their way hungrily to the Kopitiam foodcourt in the mall. Here's what we ate for lunch.

Don't bother trying the Kimchi noodles. It's nothing but instant noodles with a few pathetic pieces of kimchi. As for the chee chong fun and porridge..both were quite delicious. Lastly, the fried hokkien mee definitely is worth the waiting time! Alicia is on a hokkien mee craving. She had hokkien mee for both her lunch and dinner the day before and still couldn't resist eating the same dish on Sunday!

After satisfying our tummies, we made our way to the taxi stand, where Andrew is, waiting for us after spending a few hours prawning (same area as the animals' home) It's really nice of him to fetch us there.

It's really an eye opener for me, as this being the first time visiting Pasir Ris farmway . A few other pet farms and dog training schools can also be found there.

Basically ALL is an organisation that depends on the kindness and donations from the general public. It tries to raise awareness to the public about animal abuse and they home about 150-200 strays and pets (dogs and cats) abandon by their owners (due to old age, sickness etc) There is also a huge cattery at the other side of the farm which we didn't venture to due to the heavy downpour in the afternoon.

Donations and voluntary work is welcomed, though do note that this place isn't really meant for kids . It is not a petting zoo ultimately. Some of the dogs were abused pretty badly, though they do not bite, they do get into a fight once awhile. It is also not a place for the' princesses'. If you hate hands on and doing dirty work, you probably wouldn't enjoy your time helping out there.

For the newcomers like me, Joanna and Andrew, we were a little intimidated initially. Some barked loudly to get attention. But most of these dogs just want to be loved, and generally they are very friendly . We were being surrounded by the dogs the minute we walked in thru the gates :) They were so happy to see new friends visiting them..and took no time to sniff us and were wagging their tails :)

My fav. dog-- Mao mao! He is such a darling... sitting next to me during the downpour on the stone seat.
He didn't even whimper abit! The little furry one next to him is a real cutie... scared of the thunder and had to be carried by Joanne.

After warming up to the doggies and they us, we quickly got down to help out with the preparation of the doggies' lunch. Don't expect these dogs to be fed with steaks or expensive can food. They eat a mixture of human and dog food. Rice and left overs brought by some of the volunteers were all placed in big plastic tubs, with the food evenly spread out into three tubs. Next dog food is being mixed into the rice and we had to use our hands to stir in the mixture. By this time, the dogs have already surrounded us, can't wait to have their lunch :) Even with 3 large tubs, food is still scares for the dogs.

It's kinda sad looking at some of the dogs. They were of pedigree breeds but were being abandon by their owners. Some of them have sadness in their eyes and they look at you yearningly.

Things got really bad in the midst of the doggies' lunch time. The sky decided to pour really heavily and there was also a short circuit to the power supply at the farm due to the lightnings. Rain was coming in to the farm slowly and steadily. Soon a mini flood surrounded the premises, with water level coming up to around our ankles~! Some of the dogs were afraid of the thunders and were huddling around us :P

Some of them were also shivering due to the cold weather and wet conditions. Most of us were sitting on the stone seats , trying to keep our feet dry from the flood while Alicia was busy with some of the playful doggies, running in the waters and playing with her fav. dogs. :)

The two cuties keeping me company side by side :)
Yeah, look at the rain water.... really deep

Soon the downpour got smaller and the water level also subsided. It was also time to clean up and make our way back. The other regular volunteers were also leaving. Would I still go back this sunday? yup yup...i am :) It's nice to do this ...there is more than life than just shopping and eating ..

Our tummies were growling again as we leave the dogs . The four of us finally made up our minds after a series of brainstorming as to what to eat for dinner. Pipping hot and spicy frog porridge emerged as the winning choice! Just the kind of food to eat on a cold weather :)

Oh! We even made a quick stop over at Andrew's before going for dinner. He has to bring the prawns back home first. They were in his car boot the whole time! Not dead yet coz got pump..
We ladies really made ourselves at home at Andrew's, had a fun time going thru his photos :P

Fresh water prawns Andrew caught for his family :)

It was about 9.45pm by the time we finished our dinner . I thought we'd call it a night but no... the program continues. The girls were curious to find out what kind of pub Andrew calls 2nd home to everyday after work. Hence all of us found ourselves in one of those *ahem* cheena ktv pub along Jalan Bersar . Andrew practically knows everyone there...from the boss (who's his friend) to the female waitresses :P I was already shutting down by then. But still managed to sing a few songs and played a few rounds of 大老二 ( choh dai di ) in my zombie state.

me ish a good girl.. no drink alcohol :x
Guess what drink is this!!

Darn! this is one long long entry. We finally called it a day at mid night!! It really has been an enjoyable day with these 3 friends. Thanks guys :) Looking forward to next sunday already!! :)
